Wood Flooring FAQ: How To Maintain & Clean Wood Floors
How To Maintain & Clean Wood Floors
Protect your hardwood floor investment One question that we are asked almost every day is, “How do I care for my wood floors?” Wood floor maintenance or proper wood floor cleaning practices are important. Preventive maintenance for wood flooring today involves protecting the finish from scratches, spills and moisture. It is important to remove grit and dirt from hardwood floors. Dirt and grit are the biggest enemies when it comes to scratching or scouring the floor finish. Depending on the amount of traffic in your house, you may only have to clean hardwood floors once a week. An extra precaution used in order to maintain clean hardwood floors may be to have people remove footwear when they enter the house. By doing this, you may limit the amount of heel marks imprinted into the floors and the maintenance required in the future.
Below are the steps we recommend. Daily: Sweep, dust mop or vacuum your hardwood floor daily to remove loose dirt and grit before it can scratch the surface of your floor. (Use only vacuums that have a special hard-surface setting). Thoroughly clean your kitchen hard wood floor twice as often as other areas of your house. Weekly: Vacuum, then clean your floors with a general neutral hardwood floor cleaner. We recommend Bona® Hardwood floor cleaner with a microfiber mop.
If there are worn patches, do not use water, or water and vinegar as the liquid can penetrate the wood and cause warping
6-12 mths: Have your floors professionally cleaned at least once a year. Regular mopping just doesn’t reach the stubborn dirt that lies deep in the pores of your wood grain, but with our commercial grade rotary scrubber and commercial grade wood floor cleaner we can deep clean your wood floors and bring back the beauty —you’ll be amazed by the results, and unlike other methods, our process is low odor and non-toxic.
12-18mths: Have your floors professionally cleaned with a rotary scrubber and a professional strength wood floor cleaner, and have a coat of Bona refresher applied over the surface every 12-18 months depending on the traffic your floor receives. (This will help protect your floors and add year to their life).
